In one of my orders from Amazon Fresh, Amazon decided to gift me with a FREE Amazon Dash. This device has been sitting on my kitchen counter for more than a month now so I figured that it is time to open it and take it for a test drive. As you guys know, I hate the Amazon Dash Button program and when I bought one it didn’t even work, this time though I will keep an open mind.
I actually really like the packaging….
What’s in the box….
A view of the other side of the device shows a record button and a scan button.
At the end is a scanner.
The good thing about the setup is that you don’t need a separate app because you just use Amazon’s own app for the setup instructions. The bad part was that setup was actually initially tricky because the app has a bug.
The app asks for your wifi name and passcode to give the information via bluetooth to your Amazon Dash device but if your phone isn’t currently connected to the wifi you will get the error message “Oops! You did not enter a network name.” Not a great bug message since it doesn’t explain the real corrective action and I did put the network name as you can see. Sure stumped me for a while and I am a software engineer myself!
After I turned my phone’s wifi on that fixed that and I was ready to roll. The app even gave pretty neat instructions on how to use the device.
Basically I went to town scanning everything – hey I had to check that it worked! 😉 I also used the voice recorder option, which felt a little silly to use. 🙂
The items I scanned were added to my “saved for later” section. The device recognized me saying “buy lots of stuff” but for some reason the barcode for the water bottle that I scanned came up as “Swiss Cross XL”….?
I don’t know if I will use this little tool that much, but I think it will be useful to keep it by the fridge for when I want to remind myself to order eggs and milk. 🙂 Fresh produce is hard to keep stocked at the right amount but letting myself know when I am actually running low will be useful.
It appears that Amazon sent me the first generation device, because mine doesn’t stick to the fridge or look like this new one, but there’s actually an offer right now to get one for FREE!
